Honey Butter Popcorn Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Saucepan

  • Corn kernels (1/2 cup)

  • Butter/oil (3 tablespoons)

  • For coating: honey (½ cup), butter (¼ cup), salt (½ teaspoon)

Instructions:

Step 1: Puff the corn kernels

At first, we prepare that classic popcorn. You can use your go-to method for popping the kernels. You may also use the regular stovetop method we will be discussing here to get perfectly crunchy popcorn. After bringing all the ingredients listed above together in one place, allow the saucepan to heat properly. Now, add oil or butter to it and let it heat.

Next, as the oil/butter is properly heated, evenly layer the kernels in the pan. As all the kernels pop fully, take the pan out of the heat. This stage needs proper attention as even a few seconds of overheating can burn your popcorn.

Transfer the popcorn to a bowl. If there are any unpopped kernels, remove them.

Step 2: Prepare honey-butter mix

For this step, take another saucepan. A small one works quite well for this step. As the pan heats properly, melt the butter and add honey and salt. Now, to bring that smooth texture, let the mix simmer on low heat. A few minutes and the mix is ready.

The caramel-like glaze from the same mix can also be made, by letting it thicken. Just increase the simmering time. A few more minutes and you get the exact texture. But if you are worried about honey’s nutrient degradation, you might avoid heating honey for too long.

You can add cinnamon powder towards the end to get that extra flavor.

Step 3: Coating popcorn

Now is the step to coat the popcorn with the prepared honey-butter glaze. Be cautious here as the warmer the mix is, the better the popcorn will be coated. Don't let the mix cool!

To the popcorn transferred to the large bowl, pour the honey-butter gradually and toss the bowl in between. If you want every popcorn piece to get equally glazed, take the help of a spatula.

Step 4: Final baking

For anyone liking the sticky texture of honey, just grab it and enjoy the popcorn. But if you want your popcorn on the drier side, take a baking tray and spread the popcorn evenly and sparsely in it and bake them for 10 to 15 minutes. Give a proper stir in the mid of baking so all sides get crunchy.

Step 5: Serve

As you take the popcorn out of the oven, hold for a few minutes (It’s hard to resist though!). Let the popcorn cool. Though the duration is short, it is crucial for the honey butter glaze to harden. And finally you can enjoy sweet, salty and buttery crispy popcorn.

Variations of Honey Popcorn recipe

There are several unique variations to classic popcorn. Some of the best healthy popcorn recipes using honey are:

  • Spicy versions: Using hot honey in the recipe is a clever way to give a spicy twist to above prepared honey popcorn recipe. Or you may also give a touch of sriracha or cayenne pepper powder in the same honey butter mix we have prepared above.

  • Healthy popcorn balls: Marshmallows and corn syrup are traditionally used in making popcorn balls. But honey can be a proper replacement for these ingredients and the result will be equally yummy popcorn balls.

  • Herb and spices infusion: Cinnamon honey popcorn and herbed popcorn are some other ways to create your favorite snack.

  • Gourmet versions: Another super indulgent popcorn recipe to not miss out is chocolate popcorn.

Notes

  • The honey popcorn can be stored for up to a week. For keeping that perfect crunch intact, store the excess popcorn only in an airtight container.

  • The honey butter recipe is totally heat sensitive and the popcorn may burn if not taken proper care of. Not only popcorn, even the honey butter mix can easily catch the burnt taste within seconds. So in all the preparation steps, don't crank the heat up too high.
